The great internet migratory box of electronic junk

Can you stand the suspense? I got my mystery box! More info here:

I love the phrase “Rattle OK!”.

Steel chef’s table

I just purchased a steel table from a co-worker and I think I’m in love with it. It’s a stainless steel chef’s table from John Boos & Co. It’s 40×24x40 48″x24″x40″. I think I’m going to use it as a standing computer desk. Or for food prep. Or for just gazing at.
Right now I’m using it as a workbench for some projects, which is a horrible idea, as a conductive surface isn’t the smartest thing to have when dealing with electronics. As soon as I build a new wood workbench in the garage all of my projects are moving out there. Then I can put this beauty to better use.

Morning tabs

tabs, originally uploaded by JPPark.

These are the tabs I open in Firefox every morning to see what’s going on in my version of the world.

iGoogle homepage with news, gmail and other interesting things
GoDaddy web-based email
Dealnews to buy cheap stuff
LATimes for local news
Engadget for news about, er, gadgets
Cool Tools for actually useful stuff
BoingBoing to have something to talk about around the water cooler
MAKE: Blog because it rules
BoingBoing Gadgets for fun, snarky, well-written gadget info

I’ve got loads of other sites I check during the day, but this list is my “morning paper”. What’s yours?

Tube Time

I think this beauty is the work of Eric Schlaepfer. He restores vintage tubes and causes them to reveal the current time. I want one!

The Great Internet Migratory Box Of Electronics Junk

From Evil Mad Scientist Labs: “The Great Internet Migratory Box Of Electronics Junk is a progressive lending library of electronic components.”

I’m so excited, I’ve been chosen to receive the box! That means I get to pull a few interesting bits out to use for my own projects and then add to it some odd things from around my workbench that someone else may find a use for.

Fireproof colander?

I’m in need of a small, fireproof, wire-mesh basket for a project I’m building. It needs to withstand direct flame from a propane camping stove. About the size of a baseball hat. Anyone have a source for something like that? Please email me or leave a comment. Thank you.

RFID Conveyor demo

I did a couple of demos at Maker Faire about how I build projects for the magazine. I asked Usman to talk about the software he wrote for our RFID Conveyor belt. Here’s some video of that.

Hands on with Thingamagoop

thingamagoop, originally uploaded by JPPark.

My son and I have been watching the YouTube video of these funky little light-sensitive, bleeping robots for the past year. We always crack up when a gaggle of them “panic” as the lights go on (this raises their pitch an octave or so). So I was very excited to get some hands-on time with one at the Maker Faire. Even more exciting, Bleep Labs is making a kit available for sale soon. For $35 we’ll get to build our own from scratch, and make our own enclosure for it. Face stickers will be included.

Usman and his cluster

Usman and his cluster, originally uploaded by JPPark.

My great friend and co-conspirator Usman Muzaffar showed me this awesome project he built. It’s a tiny cluster of MiniITX computers. He and the other programmers at his company, Electric Cloud, need access to multi-node clusters in order to test their software. To avoid interrupting the “real” clusters in their server room, he made a couple of these for testing. I’m disproportionately in love with neat things tied together in multiples.

Project on Dinosaurs and Robots

My friend Mark just posted a video he made at Maker Faire of me demonstrating my new project for Make Magazine, the RFID Conveyor Belt. You can click the image to see his post at he and Mister Jalopy’s most excellent blog, Dinosaurs and Robots.
